Health Sciences Library Annual Report (2018-2019): Initiatives & News

Fun and games

We continue to incorporate user experience elements as part of our regular operations. This included several holiday themed activities:

Valentines event Easter egg hunt Halloween Captain Jack DIY Card Making

Printing

We upgraded the copier/printer machines at both campuses. Printing in colour and in different sizes is now possible.

new printers

Class Gifts

The graduating undergraduate medical class bestows a gift to the Dean. We collect, for archival purposes, the details of the gifts. Those details include artist information and class date, and we've created plaques to hang with the gifts (where possible):

NOTE: We were not always successful in determining the artistic attribution of earlier gifts. If you notice "unknown" details on those plaques, and you can provide the missing information, please contact: askthelibrary@nosm.ca.

Cram Carts

We have "Cram carts" available at each campus. They are rolled out during the end of module exams, bell ringers etc. and are stocked with supplies to support studying. They are loaded with stationery and snacks.

Newsletter

OFF THE SHELF has consistent readership. Each newsletter has a mix of topical articles and recurring columns.  In addition to the links on our website and social media channels, the newsletter is circulated to faculty and learners and shared via the NOSM Pulse. We also feature the latest issue on our website.

Website

We launched our new website, which included new features like our FAQ page:

FAQ page

The revisions to the website were substantial, introducing our search bar amongst other upgrades, and training was also provided.

Endowment Fund

In 2017, Ken Boshcoff and an anonymous donor committed to matching the first $50,000 to support the launch of our Endowment Fund. To date we have raised over $80,000. The endowment fund will be used to enhance the Library's collection, with a particular emphasis on Indigeneous and Francophone health materials.

Staff Updates

Alanna Campbell was on leave beginning in September. Jennifer Roy joined us as her replacement until May.
