Searching PubMed: Tips for basic searches

Automatic Term Mapping (ATM)

Untagged terms that are entered in the search box are matched (in this order) against a Subject translation table (including MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) , a Journals translation table, the Author index, and an Investigator (Collaborator) index.

When a match is found for a term or phrase in a translation table the mapping process is complete and does not continue on to the next translation table.

Basic searching by text word

PubMed allows users to search with text words, similar to a Google search.  Automatic Term Mapping (ATM) is used to identify results when searching by text word(s).

Searching for a citation

Use the single citation matcher to quickly find a citation by journal title, author, or article title.

Basic searching by phrase

How do I search for phrases?
