Liaison Librarians

A Liaison Librarian has been assigned to each of the 5 Theme Committees, as well as to each of the Postgraduate programs. A total of 43 distinct interactions occurred during 2014/2015.

The interactions with the Theme Committees are usually initiated by the Liaison Librarian regarding module resources, whereas interactions with PGE programs are typically requests for assistance with copyright, linking to resources, and citation verification.

General Library Sessions

The Librarians taught 3 general library sessions (open to all NOSM faculty, students and staff). They were held in the Libraries at each campus over the lunch hour. The topics included: 1. Finding Library resources, 2. Accessing Library resources 3. Choosing the right resource

Undergraduate Medical Education Sessions

Introduction to CBL (Case Based Learning): Searching for CBL-appropriate resources, resource evaluation, Google search techniques

Introduction to TOS (Topic Oriented Sessions): Use of databases and point-of-care tools, focusing on Access Medicine and Medscape Reference

Library Orientation Tours: Mandatory Library orientation and tour for Year 1 medical students 

Phase 1 Academic Week: Formulating a searchable question, developing a PICO, and basic database searching to find prognosis articles on mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI)  

Phase 2 Orientation: Evidence-based medicine and library skills sessions for the second year undergraduate medical students, focusing on question formulation, PICO and searching for the evidence.

Orientation for new residents: Orientation to the Library and to evidence-based medicine for PGY1 residents

We provided the following programming at the Northern Constellations Conference:

  • Health Sciences Library: Accessing available resources and services
    • Faculty orientation to the library's resources and services
  • Pubmed for Busy Healthcare Professionals
    • ​Tools and strategies for effective, efficient searching in Pubmed

And continued to develop the 5 part accredited series of self-guided online tutorials. Modules 1 through 3 available: 

  1. Essentials of Evidence-Based Medicine: The EBM Cycle
  2. Essentials of EBM: Assess & Ask
  3. Essentials of EBM: Acquire

The remaining 2 modules will launch in late 2015.
