Health Sciences Library Annual Report (2015-2016): Research Support

Research Support Highlights

  • Search requests for systematic reviews rose; requests were received for four systematic reviews and one systematic search & review. Topics included:
    • Chronic sinusitis pain and depression
    • Mining injuries

    • Prevalence of CKD in Indigenous Populations

    • Use of Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions as a measure of access to primary health

    • Driving and diabetes in older adults – a systematic search and review

  • Librarians participated in 77 research consultations with a total of 92 users

  • Two new research support services were launched: 

    • Scholarly Publishing Support Service

    • Tracking and Assessing Research Impact/Scholarly Activity Service 

  • A copyright tutorial series was created and is available on the Library's website and YouTube channel

Copyright Services

We provide a Copyright Consultation Service that offers guidance and support with questions relating to copyright. Copyright requests involve a combination of the following: 

  1. Working with requestor(s) to determine and articulate the uses they want to make of copyright protected materials. 
  2. Determining what could be reproduced given existing e-licenses/Access Copyright/Copyright Act provisions. 
  3. Locating copyright holders in cases where permission needs to be requested. 
  4. Working with requestor(s) to communicate with copyright holders. 
  5. Answering general copyright questions and questions about copyright as they relate to interlibrary loan practices or the reserve collection. 
  • NEW: Copyright Tutorial Series. This tutorial series is intended to explain some of the basic principles of copyright and consists of five short tutorials on the following foundational questions:
    • What is copyright? 
    • What is covered by copyright? 
    • Who owns copyright? 
    • What is a license agreement? 
    • What is public domain, open access and creative commons?

2 New Services:

  1. Scholarly Publishing Support Service: provides NOSM faculty, learners and staff with publication information that will aid them in making decisions about where to publish a manuscript.
  2. Tracking and Assessing Research Impact/Scholarly Activity Service:provides NOSM faculty, learners and staff with the tools/ability to track and assess their scholarly activity/research impact.

Interlibrary Loan

We upgraded our interlibrary loan system to a newer version of Relais.

Faculty Publications Project

Every year the Librarians conduct the annual NOSM faculty publications search; approximately 1500 faculty members are searched; we also maintain a database of the citations collected. A final report is submitted to the Director, Health Sciences Library, Associate Dean, Research and also to the Faculty Affairs Unit.
