Health Sciences Library Annual Report (2017-2018): Access Services

New to the collection

JAMA Evidence:

We licensed JAMA Evidence. This resource includes the latest editions of Users' Guide to the Medical Literature, The Rational Clinical Examination and Care at the Close of Life, as well as teaching slides for each of these popular books.

Also included in this resource are calculators, an EBM glossary, worksheets for critical appraisal and the information life cycle, and podcasts on core issues related to EBM.

Summon:

We implemented a discovery tool called Summon. Evaluations of several platforms were conducted, and Summon proved best able to meet our needs. This discovery tool provides a general search box on the website that draws from many sources.

RxTx:

We licensed the full version of RxTx from the Canadian Pharmacists Association. In addition to the eCPS and Compendium of Therapeutic Choices it also grants us access to the Compendium of Therapeutics for Minor Ailments, and the Compendium of Products for Minor Ailments.

Deselection:

We aim to maintain an up-to-date and relevant collection supporting all programs offered by NOSM. To this end, we undertook the deselection of print materials on the Lakehead campus that were either also held electronically or had become out of date. There remains approximately 2470 items at each campus.

Collection Dollars

The collection budget was increased, allowing us to redress gaps in the collection after years of frozen growth. The graph below separates the current expenditures between online databases, serials and monographs (both print and electronic).
