Where to Publish: Finding Journals

A guide to help you find the right place to publish your research

Finding journals

Getting started

To begin identifying potential journals for your work:

  • Look at your references. What journals are frequently cited in your manuscript or in similar articles?
  • Reflect on your own reading habits. Journals you read regularly might also be good venues for publication.

Using journal discovery tools

Several tools can help you match your topic to relevant journals:

  • JANE (Journal/Author Name Estimator)
Helps identify suitable journals by analyzing your abstract or keywords against content indexed in PubMed.
  • JOT
Recommends the same journals as JANE based on your title, abstract, or references, alongside additional journal metrics.
  • BISON
Suggests open access journals based on your title, abstract, or list of references.
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
Allows you to browse open access journals by subject.

  • Many major publishers offer in-house matching tools that recommend journals from within their collection based on your manuscript details.
