Libguides

Libguides is a product that allows us to highlight relevant information and resources in an easy to use interface.

The Librarians have published 36 libguides, 4 of which were new in 2012-2013. This annual report was created in libguides.

The guides were viewed 8,222 times.

Liaison Librarians

A Liaison Librarian has been assigned to each of the 5 Theme Committees, as well as to each of the Postgraduate programs. In the past year, the liaison librarians reported 38 ‘interactions’ with their designated Theme (21) or PG program (17).

The interactions are varied in terms of depth, from a quick reference question to a comprehensive literature search. Both the Theme Committee Chairs and the PG Program Coordinators have been supportive and appreciative of this service.

Orientation Week Library Tours

  • Content: Mandatory Library orientation and tour for Year 1 medical students
  • Total instruction time: 6 hours (3 x 1hr sessions per campus)

Phase 1 Academic Week

The Library gave a 3-hour workshop for the 64 first year students. The students were all located at the Laurentian campus. The session provided an introduction to evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal, and gave the students the opportunity to formulate searchable questions, develop a PICO, search for the literature, and critically appraise articles using JAMA worksheets. To make the session more relatable, we used lighthearted articles from BMJ’s Christmas Research series. Titles included:

  • Were James Bond’s drinks shaken because of alcohol-induced tremor?
  • Ice cream evoked headaches (ICEH) study: randomised trial of accelerated versus cautious ice cream eating regimen
  • Didgeridoo playing as an alternative treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome: randomised controlled trial

Phase 2 Orientation

We presented a robust introduction to evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal for all Year 2 students. The two half-day sessions were presented in person at both the Lakehead and Laurentian campuses. Using Sherlock Holmes as a reference point, the sessions combined didactic teaching and interactive exercises to develop the necessary skills for formulating questions and PICO, searching for evidence, and critical appraisal.

Postgraduate Medical Education Sessions

Librarians continue to contribute to Academic Day programming for Family Medicine residents. The year began in July with presentations about the CanMEDs Scholar Role. First year residents from all programs attended this half-day session. Librarians on both campuses presented on the importance of information seeking and knowledge management skills for life-long learning.

This year, a Librarian also attended the research sessions which are held via videoconference during Academic Days.

Sessions:

  • 16 Evidence Based Medicine tutorials
  • 10 Research tutorials plus 1 Research Day
  • Searching the Literature: 3hr session with Pediatric residents
  • Searching the Literature: 3hr session with Psychiatry residents

Continuing Education & Professional Development

The Librarians were strong participants in programming at the Northern Constellations Conference with 2 library-led presentations and one presentation based on a collaborative research project. The sessions were:

  • Five A’s: Breaking down the evidence based medicine process – Alanna Campbell & Jen Dumond
  • Citation management 101: Important tools to make research and publishing easier – Sophie Regalado
  • Creating LGBTQ-positive spaces in the class room – Kathleen Beatty, Dr. Stacey Ritz & Jen Dumond

The Library worked with CEPD to develop a series of self-guided online tutorials aimed at faculty. The first 1-hour online tutorial was launched during this reporting period: http://www.nosm.ca/education/chpe/general.aspx?id=14001

The remaining four modules continue to be in development for launch in late 2014. The session presented at Northern Constellations was a condensed version of this series.
