Limits & filters

Filters are displayed on the left side of the results screen.  The most commonly used filters are displayed, but you can add additional filters.  For more information on filters, see the previous Tips for Advanced Searches page.  

Save, Email, Send to

These options allow you to manage and share citations. You can choose to save your results in a variety of file formats,  email results to yourself or others, or send results to the clipboard for temporary storage, my bibliography or collections for more permanent storage in your MyNCBI account, or export to a citation manager like Mendeley or Zotero.  

Display

PubMed's default is to display search results in summary format, sorted by Best Match.  The Best Match sort order is based on an algorithm that analyzes each PubMed citation found with your search terms. Both settings can be changed should you desire.  In addition to summary (short snippets of abstracts), you can choose full abstract (when available), PubMed (useful for exporting to a research management tool), and PMID (an identifier unique to PubMed).  Results can be sorted by Best Match, publication date, first author, or journal. You can also choose how many citations you'd like to see at one time.  The default is 10, but you can choose as many as 200.  

Library or publisher icons

Library or publisher icons, located in the upper right of the results screen, indicate access to full-text articles. If you find an interesting citation without full-text icons, always double check our collection.
